A custom family figurine from a photo is a small, sculpted 3D-printed keepsake made to resemble your family — or your newborn — built from a picture you upload. At 3DCentral, our studio uses an AI-assisted sculpt to turn your photo into a 3D starting model, which a human artist then refines for likeness and details, and the piece is printed on demand at our farm in Laval, Quebec. The result is a tactile, display-ready memento you can hold, gift, and keep on a shelf for years.
Photographs live on screens and in albums. A figurine lives on the mantel, the desk, the nursery shelf. That shift — from flat image to a small object you can pick up — is exactly why so many families turn a meaningful photo into something three-dimensional. Below is how the process works, what makes a great source photo, and the kinds of keepsakes families ask us to print most.
Why turn a family or newborn photo into a figurine?
A figurine captures a moment in a way a frame on the wall cannot. It is something a grandparent can hold, a sibling can show their friends, and a child can grow up beside. For new parents especially, a small sculpt of the family-of-three (or four, or five) marks the arrival of a new chapter in a form that does not fade or get buried in a camera roll.
Families commission these keepsakes for plenty of reasons:
- New-baby announcements and first-year milestones — a figurine of the new family unit, or a tiny sculpt to mark a first birthday.
- Baby showers and gender reveals — a personalized centrepiece or gift that outlasts the party.
- Grandparent gifts — a hold-in-your-hand version of the grandkids that sits proudly on a shelf.
- Family portraits in 3D — the whole household, pets included, in one display piece.
- Memorial and remembrance keepsakes — a gentle, lasting way to honour someone (or a beloved pet) you cherish.
Because every piece is made on demand, there is no warehouse of pre-made stock — your figurine is created for your photo and printed when you order it. That is the whole idea behind a print farm: decentralized, small-batch manufacturing with very little waste.
How the custom figurine process works
The studio is designed to feel approachable even if you have never thought about 3D printing before. Here is the general flow:
- Upload your photo or describe your idea. Start at our custom figurine studio with a clear photo of the person, family, or moment you want captured.
- Get an early look. Our AI-assisted tools produce a fast sculpted starting point so you get a sense of the figure early in the process.
- Human finishing. A real artist reviews and refines the likeness, proportions, and details — the part that keeps a keepsake from looking machine-stamped.
- Printed on demand in Quebec. Your figurine is produced using FDM 3D printing in PLA, available in 10+ colours, at our Laval facility.
- Shipped to you. It ships from within Canada — and there are no domestic customs charges on shipments inside Canada.
This pairing of AI speed with hands-on finishing is deliberate. Automated sculpting gives you an affordable starting point; a human touch is what makes the cheeks, the pose, or that newborn bundle actually read as yours.
What about pets, couples, and other family members?
Family keepsakes rarely stop at parents and kids. The studio also handles pet and memorial figurines, couple and wedding sculpts, bobbleheads, and action-figure-style pieces. If your “family” includes a dog who thinks he runs the house, he belongs in the figurine too. Browse the verticals from the custom studio hub to see the styles available.
Getting the best source photo
The quality of your keepsake starts with the quality of your photo. You do not need a professional studio shoot, but a few habits help the sculpt come out cleaner:
- Good, even lighting. Natural daylight near a window beats a harsh flash. Avoid heavy shadows across the face.
- Sharp focus. A crisp image gives the sculpt more to work with than a blurry snapshot.
- Clear faces. Front-facing or gently angled, with eyes open and unobstructed by hats or hands.
- A full view of the pose. If you want the figurine to show a specific stance — a parent cradling a newborn, for example — choose a photo where that pose is visible.
- Higher resolution. A larger, clearer file leaves room for detail in the finished piece.
If you are unsure whether a photo will work, send it over through our contact page and we will give you an honest read before you order.
Materials, durability, and care
Our custom keepsakes are printed in PLA using FDM 3D printing, with your choice from our range of 10+ standard colours. PLA gives a clean, detailed finish that displays beautifully indoors on a shelf, desk, or nursery dresser. An outdoor-safe PETG option is coming soon for pieces that need to handle more wear, but for a treasured family or baby keepsake meant to live indoors, PLA is the natural fit.
Care is simple: keep your figurine out of direct, prolonged heat (a sunny dashboard or a hot car is not its friend) and dust it gently. Treated as the display piece it is, it will hold up for years.
A photo freezes a moment. A figurine lets your family pick that moment up, turn it over, and put it somewhere it will be seen every day.
Where custom figurines fit at 3DCentral
Custom photo-to-figurine work is a one-time, per-order service — you pay once for the keepsake you commission. It is separate from our other offerings, so a quick map helps:

To be clear: the commercial license covers only 3DCentral’s own original designs — it does not apply to your custom keepsake or to the curated community-artist designs we print with permission in the main shop. Your family figurine is simply yours to enjoy.
FAQ
How accurate is the likeness from a photo?
The AI-assisted sculpt creates a strong starting likeness, and a human artist then refines it. Custom figurines are stylized keepsakes rather than forensic replicas, so think characterful and recognizable rather than a hyper-exact copy. A clear, well-lit photo gives the best result.
Can I include the whole family and our pet in one figurine?
Yes. Families regularly request multi-person pieces and pets together. The custom studio supports family groups, couples, and pet/memorial figurines — start at /custom/ and tell us who belongs in the scene.
Is a new-baby figurine safe to give a young child?
Our figurines are decorative display collectibles, not toys, and are not intended as children’s toys. For a newborn or family keepsake, we recommend it as a shelf or display piece — a memento to be admired rather than a plaything.
How long does a custom figurine take?
Because each piece is sculpted, finished by hand, and printed on demand, turnaround varies with the complexity of the order and current queue. For a current estimate on your specific piece, reach out through our contact page before you order.
What does shipping cost?
Shipping within Canada is free on orders over $149 CAD, with no domestic customs charges on shipments inside Canada. US and international rates are calculated at checkout.
