Stringing — those thin wisps of filament between parts of a print — is one of the most common 3D printing issues. Here is how to prevent and remove stringing for cleaner figurines.
What Causes Stringing
Stringing occurs when molten filament oozes from the nozzle during travel moves. The nozzle leaves a thin thread between separate features. Temperature, retraction, and travel speed all contribute to the problem.
Temperature Tuning
Lower printing temperature reduces stringing by making the filament more viscous. Start with the manufacturer recommended temperature and reduce by 5°C increments until stringing stops without sacrificing layer adhesion.
Retraction Settings
Retraction pulls filament back into the nozzle before travel moves. Increase retraction distance (3-6mm for Bowden, 1-2mm for direct drive) and retraction speed (40-70mm/s) to reduce oozing.
Post-Processing
Light stringing can be removed with a heat gun (brief pass at 200°C) or a craft knife. A quick flame from a lighter (CAREFULLY) melts thin strings instantly. Sanding handles thicker strings.
