Resin vs FDM Printing: Which Is Better for Figurines

The debate between resin and FDM printing for figurines involves tradeoffs in detail, durability, safety, and production scalability. Understanding both helps you choose the right technology.

Detail Resolution

Resin printers achieve finer detail — individual scales on a dragon, subtle facial expressions, and thread-thin decorative elements. FDM at 0.12mm layers captures excellent detail but cannot match resin at microscopic scales.

Durability and Handling

FDM prints in PLA and PETG are durable, impact-resistant, and safe to handle. Cured resin is more brittle and can chip on impact. For collectibles that will be handled, displayed on shelves, or given to younger recipients, FDM wins.

Safety and Environment

Uncured resin is toxic and requires careful handling with gloves and ventilation. FDM filaments (PLA, PETG) are safe for home use with basic ventilation. For production environments, FDM is significantly safer.

Production Scalability

FDM printers scale easily — add more machines. Resin printers require post-processing (washing and curing) that adds labor and equipment. For high-volume production, FDM is more efficient and cost-effective.

Our Choice

3DCentral uses FDM exclusively for production. The combination of durability, safety, scalability, and excellent detail at our calibrated settings makes FDM the optimal choice for collectible figurines.
