PLA and ABS are the two original 3D printing filaments, but they could not be more different. Understanding their properties helps you choose the right material for any project.
Material Properties
PLA is plant-based, stiff, and easy to print. ABS is petroleum-based, flexible, and heat-resistant. PLA holds fine detail better. ABS can be chemically smoothed with acetone vapor for a glossy finish.
Safety Considerations
PLA emits minimal fumes and is generally considered food-safe (though printed objects are not, due to bacterial harboring in layer lines). ABS emits styrene fumes that require ventilation. For home use and collectibles, PLA is the safer choice.
Print Quality
PLA produces sharper details, cleaner bridges, and less warping. ABS is more challenging to print — it requires an enclosed printer, higher temperatures, and careful adhesion management. For figurines and collectibles, PLA wins on quality.
Durability Comparison
ABS handles impacts better and is more resistant to heat and chemicals. However, PLA is more rigid and holds its shape under normal conditions. For collectibles that sit on shelves, PLA durability is perfectly adequate.
Our Recommendation
At 3DCentral, we use PLA for 90% of our collectible production. The superior detail, easier production, and lower environmental impact make it ideal for decorative figurines. We use PETG — not ABS — when durability is needed.
