PLA (polylactic acid) is the foundation material of the 3D printed collectible industry. What Is PLA Filament?

PLA stands for polylactic acid, a thermoplastic polyester derived from renewable plant resources, most commonly corn starch, sugarcane, or tapioca roots. Unlike petroleum-based plastics such as ABS or nylon, PLA’s plant-based origins give it a lower carbon footprint in production. It was originally developed for biodegradable packaging applications, but its excellent printing characteristics made it the default material for FDM 3D printing.

Key Material Properties

PLA has a glass transition temperature of approximately 60 degrees Celsius, meaning it begins to soften at that point. Its print temperature ranges from 190 to 220 degrees Celsius. It exhibits excellent bed adhesion, produces minimal odour during printing, and delivers a smooth surface finish with visible but consistent layer lines. PLA is rigid, hard, and produces vibrant, saturated colours.

PLA Colour and Finish Guide

Standard Matte PLA

The workhorse finish. Clean, consistent colour with a subtle matte texture. Available in every colour imaginable. Best for detailed figurines where colour clarity matters more than surface sheen.

Silk PLA

Contains additives that produce a lustrous, metallic sheen. Gold, silver, and copper silk PLA create premium-looking collectibles that catch light beautifully. Particularly effective on designs with curved surfaces like dragon scales, smooth figurines, and teddy bears.

Translucent PLA

Caring for PLA Collectibles

Temperature Sensitivity

PLA’s primary limitation is heat sensitivity. Above 60 degrees Celsius, PLA begins to soften and can warp. Keep collectibles away from heat vents, radiators, sunny windowsills, and hot vehicles. Normal indoor temperatures (18 to 25 degrees Celsius) are perfectly safe.

UV Exposure

Prolonged direct sunlight causes gradual colour fading in PLA. Display pieces away from windows that receive sustained direct sun. Indirect light and artificial lighting do not cause degradation.

Cleaning

Handling

PLA is rigid and durable under normal handling. Handle with clean, dry hands to avoid transferring oils that attract dust over time. For frequently handled articulated figurines, gentle use preserves joint function indefinitely.

Is PLA safe for indoor display?

Yes. PLA produces no off-gassing at room temperature and is safe for display in any indoor environment including bedrooms, offices, and living spaces.

Will PLA collectibles last?

PLA collectibles are durable and long-lasting under normal indoor conditions. Kept away from sustained heat and direct sunlight, they maintain their appearance indefinitely.

Is PLA biodegradable?

PLA is biodegradable only under industrial composting conditions (sustained temperatures above 58 degrees Celsius). It does not decompose at room temperature, in landfills, or in home compost. This means your collectibles are permanent display pieces.

Can I recycle PLA?

PLA is not accepted by most municipal recycling programs. Some specialty recyclers accept PLA, and 3DCentral is exploring recycled PLA filament as part of our sustainability initiatives.
