Layer Height Explained: Finding the Right Setting

Layer height is the single most impactful 3D printing setting — it determines surface quality, print time, strength, and detail resolution. Understanding the tradeoffs helps you choose wisely.

What Layer Height Means

Layer height is the thickness of each horizontal layer deposited by the printer. Standard range is 0.08mm (ultra-fine) to 0.32mm (draft quality). A 0.4mm nozzle typically prints from 0.08-0.28mm layers.

Fine Layers: 0.08-0.12mm

Nearly invisible layer lines. Best for miniatures, detailed figurines, and display pieces where surface quality is paramount. Drawback: print time doubles or triples compared to standard settings.

Standard Layers: 0.16-0.20mm

The sweet spot for most collectibles. Visible layer lines only on close inspection. Good balance of quality and production speed. This is what most 3DCentral products use.

Draft Layers: 0.24-0.32mm

Visible stepping on curves. Acceptable for prototypes, functional parts, and pieces that will be painted. Fastest print speed but lowest visual quality.

Our Production Choice

3DCentral uses 0.16mm for standard figurines and 0.12mm for premium detailed pieces. Each design is assigned a layer height based on its detail requirements, ensuring the best balance of quality and efficiency.
