Regular Dust Removal
Dust is the primary enemy of displayed collectibles. The layer lines characteristic of FDM-printed pieces can trap fine dust particles over time, gradually dulling the surface appearance.
Soft Brush Method
A soft-bristled brush (a clean makeup brush or a dedicated collectible dusting brush) is the gentlest and most effective tool for routine dusting. Brush lightly along the layer lines rather than against them. For articulated figurines, work the brush into joint crevices where dust accumulates.
Compressed Air Method
Canned compressed air removes dust from hard-to-reach areas including joint gaps in articulated designs, recessed details on fantasy miniatures, and the underside of gnome hats and overhangs. Hold the can upright and use short bursts to avoid moisture condensation on the piece.
Frequency
Dust displayed collectibles every two to four weeks depending on your environment. Homes with pets, open windows, or forced-air heating accumulate dust faster. Enclosed display cases reduce dusting frequency significantly.
Deep Cleaning
Periodically, a deeper clean removes accumulated oils, fingerprints, and stubborn dust.
Damp Cloth Method
Dampen a microfibre cloth with lukewarm water and a tiny amount of mild dish soap. Gently wipe the surface, following the layer lines. Rinse the cloth in clean water and wipe again to remove any soap residue. Pat dry with a clean, soft cloth. This method works well for all PLA and PETG collectibles.
What to Avoid
Never use acetone, isopropyl alcohol above 50% concentration, or harsh chemical cleaners on PLA. These can cloud, soften, or damage the surface. Avoid abrasive sponges or rough cloths that can scratch the finish. Never submerge articulated figurines in water, as moisture trapped in joints can cause stiffness.
Protecting Against Heat
PLA softens at approximately 60 degrees Celsius. This temperature is easily reached on a sunny windowsill, inside a parked car, or near a heat vent. PETG is more resistant, softening around 80 degrees Celsius.
Safe Display Locations
Display shelves away from direct heat sources are ideal. Interior walls, bookcase interiors, and any location that maintains normal room temperature (18 to 25 degrees Celsius) are safe. Avoid placing collectibles on top of electronics that generate heat, near fireplaces, or on windowsills that receive sustained afternoon sun.
Summer Precautions
Canadian summers can push indoor temperatures higher, especially in non-air-conditioned spaces. If your display area regularly exceeds 30 degrees Celsius, your PLA pieces are safe but keep them away from any additional heat sources. Never leave PLA collectibles in a parked car. UV Protection
Prolonged direct sunlight causes gradual colour fading in PLA. The UV component of sunlight breaks down the colour pigments over months of sustained exposure.
Prevention Strategies
Display away from windows that receive direct sun. UV-filtering window film reduces UV transmission if you prefer a sunlit display area. Enclosed display cases with UV-filtering glass offer the best protection. Rotating pieces periodically ensures no single side receives disproportionate UV exposure.
PETG for Sun-Exposed Areas

Caring for Articulated Figurines
Articulated figurines with print-in-place joints require a few additional care considerations.
Joint Maintenance
If joints feel stiff (especially on new pieces), work them gently back and forth. This is normal for fresh print-in-place designs and resolves quickly. Never force a joint beyond its designed range of motion. If dust accumulates in joints, compressed air directed into the gaps clears debris effectively.
Posing Frequency
Regular gentle posing actually keeps joints smooth and prevents any dust-related stiffness. Reposition your articulated ducks, foxes, penguins, and dragons every few weeks to enjoy different displays and maintain joint function.
Storage Guidelines
Short-Term Storage
For seasonal rotation of seasonal collectibles, store pieces in compartmented boxes with tissue paper or soft cloth between items. Avoid stacking heavy items on top of stored figurines.
Long-Term Storage
Store in a cool, dry location away from sunlight. Normal indoor temperatures are ideal. Avoid attics (heat in summer), uninsulated garages (temperature extremes), and damp basements (moisture). Wrap individually in acid-free tissue paper for best preservation.
Repair Tips
Minor Chips and Scratches
Small chips in PLA can sometimes be smoothed with fine-grit sandpaper (400 grit or higher). A small amount of acrylic paint colour-matched to the piece can cover minor damage. Clear nail polish can fill very small chips with a transparent repair.
Broken Pieces
Super glue (cyanoacrylate) bonds PLA effectively. Apply a thin layer to both surfaces, press together firmly, and hold for 30 seconds. Excess glue can be trimmed with a sharp blade after curing. For PETG, super glue also works but the bond may be slightly less strong due to PETG’s smoother surface.
